Our grandpa Branko Huzak bought a small hospitality establishment for our grandma Marija back in 1966 - a place that was then simply called Krčna (meaning "tavern"). The house he acquired already had a rich history - it once belonged to the parents of the late president Franjo Tuđman.
Where it all begins?
But the story goes even deeper. Our great-grandmother Franciska and great-grandfather Andrija Huzak were wedding godparents to Stjepan and Justina Tuđman, Franjo’s parents. At that time, Stjepan, Justina, and their son Franjo lived right at the address of today’s Restaurant Ribič, where they ran a humble tavern. It was there that our grandma Marija sold freshly baked bread rolls every Sunday - because back then, bread rolls were baked only on Sundays.
Later, the Tuđman family sold the house to the Zebić family, who continued the hospitality tradition until 1966, when our grandpa Branko purchased the property. From that moment on, the rest became history - warm, homely, and proud, just like the dishes we serve today.
And sometimes, we jokingly wonder: would "Francek" have ever become a president, and would Croatia have become free, if our grandpa Branko hadn’t bought the house from the Tuđman family?
